Comprehensive Public Transportation

We must expand our public transportation offerings. As we have seen, transit in the Triangle has not been up to the task of providing effective regional transit, nor has it focused on one of the Triangle's largest employment centers: Downtown Raleigh.

We should work to develop a long-range plan for rail transit with a focus on Raleigh. Streetcar services should be restored on Hillsborough and New Bern from Meredith to Wake Med. Additionally streetcar service should return to Fayetteville Street and Glenwood Ave to Crabtree Valley.

Light rail services should be investigated with a nexus of the system at the new downtown station. Light rail services from Apex, Cary, and Wake Forest will link our communities and ease congestion. In the interim the city must expand it's express bus services and expand night, early morning, and weekend services.

Light Rail In Action In Portland
Making It Happen
  • Wake Technical Community College is the second largest community college in the state and the main campus has no access to public transportation. Capital Area Transit (CAT) should be extended to all campuses immediately.
  • Express bus services must be expanded extensively. Express services that terminate in downtown Raleigh should be operated by CAT, and those that terminate in RTP, by Triangle Transit. Service to all Wake County communities must be established.
  • Late night services should be expanded to in reach, and run until 2am Thu-Sat. Early morning services should be expanded, and all lines should operate on Sunday.
  • A new model of transit governance must happen for transit to be a success in the Triangle. CAT should continue to focus on Raleigh, Wake County, and possibilities for light rail. Triangle Transit should focus on RTP circulation and express services between the four major cities of the Triangle. As a result of this shift, more funding from DMV registration fees should be shifted to the city system.
  • A new downtown multi-modal station should be built to service Amtrak and Greyhound bus, as well as serving as the main station on Raleigh light rail and commuter rail systems.
